We recently had a simple 8 up form which all 8 pages were the same and all were on the same form. 8 up same form, one sided. Preps linked the 8 positions to one file. Problem was we had lines in 3 of the forms and 5 did not. Same file was ripped for all 8 positions. How can the data be different ?

How were the pages numbered on your Preps template? Did all pages have the same number?

Pages were all numbered one. Same ripped file. Line was a hairline that was in the ripped file. Showed up on 3 of the eight positions.

We've had similar issues, also only with stepped files.

is the hairline above or below a ct?

We had similar problems in the past (hairlines at random positions).
Don't know which rip software you use, but in our case (Rampage) we turned off "dual rasterization" and the problem was fixed. Never had one single hairline again.

Here is what we found. There is a line generated when the file was ripped that had a transparent value of 0. When the file is plated, the plate rip doesn't know exactly how to treat the line and interprets it as a 1 percent value (sporadically). We installed a couple of patches for the plate rip and file rip. Also we changed our ct rip value so it is evenly divisible by the lw dpi. Example: Lw is 2400 and ct is 480...a 1 to 5 ratio.

We had fine lines show up in the plate that was not present in the single ripped page. We turned off Dual Rasterization in Rampage also, but it was still showing up. We had to place the raw eps for all pages on that form into Preps rather than using the fpo data that Rampage produces.
