How many third party service providers are there for 42" proofers? (to service Epson 10000, SpinJet 5500, etc.). We're debating the benefits of a service contract versus "pay as needed".

Thanks,

Not sure, but we've had a Fuji DoubleProof which is an HP5000 printer with a flipper very similar to the SpinJet. We've been running it for 4 years and had a service contract on it the first 2 years with GEI Calgraph. We probably had a technician in a 1/2 dozen times total. For the last 2 years we've been on our own and only had a couple of problems. In one case we had a paper sensor on the flipper go bad and we replaced it ourselves. The other problems have been skew caused by dirty paper path in the printer. Now we just keep the paper path clean and it runs great.

Don't remember how much the service contract cost, but with our experience I would not opt for a service contract.

We also have an Epson 7600 that we use for contract proofs and we've never had a service contract or required outside service in the 5 years we've had it.

Remember, companies that sell service contracts expect to make $$$ on those contracts, so they're betting against you having problems. And, there are quite a few folks that pay attention to these forums and have the same printers, so if you run into a problem you can probably get some help here.

Good Luck,
