View Full Version : Scaled Creep not working correct when numbering manually in Perfect Bound job

We have 2 48 pages double web presses which can each produce 2 sections (of 24 pages) at a time.
Normally these 2 sections follow each other up.
Example 120 pages book:
Body 03+15 --> pages 3-14 + 107-118 15-26 + 97-106
Body 27 --> pages 27-28 + 95-96
Bindery:
Outer section
Center section
Inner section

In some cases we have saddle stitched jobs were we need an extra section in between. This happens when a customer wants to have an extra insert on a specific page at the bindery.
Example 120 pages book:
Body 03+17 --> pages 3-14 + 107-118 and 17-28 + 95-104
Body 15 --> pages 15-16 + 105-106
Bindery:
Outer section
Center section
Inner section

Please note that body 03 and 15 are actually 1 signature (2 webs/sections)

In Preps it's (ofcourse) impossible to put these 2 signatures (3+17 and 15) together in one saddle stitched job. What we have to do here is manually number the pages of body 03+17, change the binding style into perfect bound, import into a preps job and have it started from page number 1.
I know it's not the most beautiful way, but in our workflow we like to prepare everything in advance and have as much as possible automated (APA, RBA) when the client sends his pages.....

Doing this and applying scaled creep to it by changing the Layout Details does not give the expected result. The high folio pages seem to get another offset in the template which creates a white space (gap between the vertical red lines in picture)

Is this a bug of just technically impossible to create in the right way.....??

Does anyone have a solution??

Thnx!

I don't use the preview feature, but my guess is that it's a bug in the preview. It doesn't show a dot-for-dot repro of what it looks like; it gives it's best idea of what it thinks it should look like. What happens when you put it through your workflow high-res preview? Does it measure out correctly? What about when you go to plate?

Thanks for your reply Christian!
The result on plate is onfortunately the same as in the preview.
I'm guessing that Preps just doesn't know what to do exactly when using it's scaled creep functionality the way I want to use it in this case.....but again, that's a guess.....

I don't use the scaled creep feature, as I am only running 5.3.1b473 and haven't upgraded to 5.3.2 yet where I believe they added the scaling feature. What is the reasoning behind using the scale feature as opposed to doing it the old fashioned way?

See this thread, especially post 5.

After reading that description, rather than setting it for 97%, why not just make the traditional creep method amount smaller? Does it actually reduce page size, or just the positioning for the creep?

You don't actually put in a percentage, you put in the creep amount. I was just using the percentage to illustrate how much the page would end up getting shrunk. The page width is reduced; the edge at the gutter stays put and the outer edge moves.
