It seems that when I'm setting up proofer SCOs to simulate uncoated press papers I have better results when I turn off BPC in the conversion device link. This seems to keep the proof less saturated, especially the blacks, and gives a better match to the press sheet. Does this make sense?

Yes, we have changed the default in the 1.1.6.3 release to uncheck the BPC for proofing destination devices because of this.

I also heard somewhere that for proofers that have one or more light black inks the black start setting should be set to 0 and the black strength set to high to reduce the bronzing effect. Is this true? Or are the CF defaults ( 30 and 50 ?) ok for proofers?

I think going down to Black Start 20% should be fine with most proofers today with light blacks. Granularity in the highlights with these types of proofers is generally limited with these settings because of the extra black output channels. Setting to 0% might be a bit dodgy, though. Black strength at 50% is still recommended.
